A mirror to faith and a blueprint for speech
Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak goodness or remain silent.
[Bukhari, Muslim]
The Prophet didnt waste wordsbecause he knew their power. In just a few, he offers us a mirror for our faith and a blueprintfor our speech: Speak goodnessor remain silent.
This isnt only about avoiding slander or hurtful speech. Its about cultivating a heart thats awakeone that thinks before it speaks, that understands words can build or break, and that every sentence echoes into eternity. It reflects a heart mindful of the Day we return to Allah.
For the one who truly believes in Allah and the Last Day, no word is ever weightless. Every utterance carries consequenceeither rising as a witness in our favor, or standing against us on the Day we meet our Lord. The tongue is small, its movements subtle, yet its reach is vast. A single phrase can earn Allahs pleasureor His wrath. As the Prophet warned, the tongue can drag a person into Hellor raise them to the heights of Paradise. [Bukhari]
And the tongue is a mirror of the heart. As Anas (RA) narrated: A persons faith will not be sound unless their heart is sound, and the heart will not be sound unless their tongue is sound. [Musnad Ahmad 13047]
But what stirs the tongue most violently? Angernot the righteous kind, but the kind born of ego and the whispers ofShaytan.
The Prophet described anger as a burning coal and he taught us that silence is a shield. If one of you becomes angry, let him remain silent. (Bukhari)
He also gave us practical steps:
Seek refuge in Allah fromShayn.
Perform wudu, for water extinguishes heat.
Change your posturesit if standing, lie down if sitting.
And always, remember, that two angels are beside usrecording each word before we even realize weve spoken it.
This Jumuah, let your silence be worship. Let your words be a garden of light. And let your tongue reflect the beauty of a heart that believes, and a soul that knows: Allah is always listening.
