Advocating for Eid as a School Holiday in Farmington.
January has been officially proclaimed as Muslim Heritage Month in Connecticut, thanks to the efforts of CAIR-CT in partnership with Governor Ned Lamont. This offers a unique opportunity to celebrate the contributions of Muslim Americans to our society, highlight the rich cultural heritage of Muslims, and promote understanding and inclusivity across our communities.
This past Friday 7th February, FVAMC held a community meeting to discuss the importance of having Eid recognized as a school holiday in the Farmington Valley Schools Division and the steps we can take to advocate for this change.
Along side with Br Khamis, Sr Husna and Sr Ahlam who led the session, focused on launching a letter-writing campaign as the first step in our efforts. Sr Ahlam is a teacher from Milford CT and was the driving force to have Eid recognized in Milford School District. Sr Husna, has been the lead in spearheading this initiative for the Farmington School District.
During the event, we:
-
Discussed why Eid should be a school holiday and its impact on students and Muslim staff.
-
Guided the community and youth on how to write effective advocacy letters.
-
Provided templates and formatting tips to simplify the process.
-
Shared creative art templates for younger children to express the significance of Eid.
It was inspiring to see so many engaged participants eager to take action. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed!

Let's continue working together to make our voices heard.
Stay tuned for next steps!
