Vandalism and Anti-Muslim Graffiti at Bobst Library Prayer Space
Salaam Alaykum
Dear Community Members,
Late this afternoon, an NYU student made a horrific discovery in Bobst Library prayer spacevandalism and anti-Muslim graffiti. Since then, we've heard from countless students expressing fear, anxiety, outrage, and concern for their safety and well-being.
While our hearts are heavy, we must acknowledge this reality with clarity: this incident is not isolated. Many in our Muslim community have endured increasing Islamophobia and anti-Muslim rhetoric in recent years. What happened in our prayer space reflects the broader discrimination and challenges Muslims face nationwide. We cannot and will not normalize such behavior.
On the days immediately after our holiest month, the month of Ramadan, it makes what our community experienced today all the more painful. But in the same vain, we want to express that theIslamic Center stands firmly with each of you during these difficult times. As always, our doors remain open to each of you, and we encourage you to reach out by email or visit our office whenever you need support.
We are working diligently with University administration to restore the prayer space as quickly as possible, and to address the broader issues this incident has revealed.A counselor from the Student Health Center will also be available for NYU students in the GSL office for anyone who wishes to speak with them.
In Community,
The Islamic Center Staff
