ICNA Council for Social Justice (ICSJ) Chair Raises Concerns Over HR 9495, Highlights Vital Role of Nonprofit Sector in U.S. Economy and Strengthening of Moral Fabric
The Chairperson of the ICNA Council for Social Justice (ICSJ) expressed serious concerns regarding specific provisions in House Resolution HR 9495, recently passed in the House of Representatives. He urged Senate members to exercise prudence and reject clauses that grant the executive branch unchecked powers to bypass due process in controlling or shutting down nonprofit organizations.
He emphasized the critical role of nonprofits in the U.S. economy, citing data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) covering 20182022. The findings offer valuable insights into the economic contributions of 501(c)(3) organizations across various levels, including national, state, and county scales, as well as by industry subsectors. Key highlights include:
Nonprofit Workforce Contribution: In 2022, over 300,000 nonprofit establishments supported 12.8 million jobs, representing 9.9% of all private-sector employment. Nearly two-thirds of nonprofit jobs (66.3%) in 2022 were concentrated in healthcare and social assistance. Other significant sectors included educational services (16.4%), other services (6.3%), and arts, entertainment, and recreation (2.6%).
Pandemic Impact: Nonprofit employment fell by 4.5% between 2019 and 2020 due to COVID-19 but rebounded partially in subsequent years, ending 2022 at 1.4% below 2019 levels.
Long-Term Stability: Industry employment shares within the nonprofit sector showed minimal variation from 2007 to 2022.
Beyond their economic contributions, nonprofit organizations play a crucial role in fostering societal values of justice, compassion, and mutual understanding. They act as bridges between diverse faiths and ethnicities, reinforcing social harmony. The Chairperson called on lawmakers to safeguard this indispensable sector, ensuring its continued ability to serve communities effectively.
He added that the executive branch already has extensive authority to prohibit any wrongdoing, and new regulations would seriously jeopardize the much-needed services aimed at uplifting the living standards of those suffering from injustice and poverty.
