Ramadan Fasting Intention

Salam everyone,

As mentioned earlier, Ramadan begins at sunset today, and the first day of fasting will be tomorrow (Saturday, March 1). It is important to remember to make your intention (niyyah) today for the complete Ramadan month or to make it before each fast day.

The niyyah is an action of the heart. A Muslim should resolve in his or her heart to fast the following day or to make the niyyah (intention) for the complete month of Ramadan. It is not mandatory to say it out loud (e.g., I intend to fast or I will fast tomorrow). The intention can be simply when a person resolves in his or her heart that they will fast the next day or the complete month. Having Suhoor (the meal before Fajr) is also considered as an intention (niyyah) for fasting.

If you do the niyyah (intention) at the beginning of Ramadan for the complete month and then you break your fast for any reason (travel, illness, or menstruation...), you should renew your intention once you resume fasting.

Jazakum Allah Khayran and may Allah accept our deeds.
