Muslims Are Congratulating Themselves...But Why?

Imam Marc Manley

I have seen several posts on social media from various pundits and personalities who seem to claim Kamala's loss as (a) some sort of victory and (b) that her loss can be laid at the feet of Gaza and those who stood for the Palestinians. In my opinion, this is an overestimation of the importance of Gaza in the minds of the American electorate. I’m not implying that it had no effect but I do believe these proclamations to be a bit–perhaps quit a bit–overblown.

The reason why these overestimations are of concern is because many of these pundits wield no small amount of influence over the mindset of Muslims, particularly the youth, who can easily be left with a false sense of accomplishment, to which Muslims can now (a) go back to not caring about politics; we seem to only get especially involved in national elections, and/or (b) be left with a false sense of security with Trump who, despite all of the optics and posturing by however-well-intended-they-may-be imāms and Muslim leaders who met with Trump, that he feels any sense of obligation to fulfill any of his vague campaign promises made during his visit the Detroit area. If they Trump's first utterings and gestures in the first and second week post-election victory is any indication, it would seem to be a firm bet that he plans to precisely the opposite. Trump may have ran on a platform (propaganda or not) of #DrainTheSwamp, it is equally clear that Trump 2.0 and his administration are in actuality, The Swamp, and thus his rhetoric is firmly ensconced in war, zionism, and many of the policies, foreign and domestic, which Muslims were (naively!) hoping he would stand against when he met with them.

As I said, the biggest fallout from these vacuous celebrations is that by giving the Muslim public a false sense of accomplishment we may position ourselves for even tougher times with the Trump administration and what it is preparing to set up after his departure in four years. This isn't said to give license to panic over Trump's ascendancy but we very much need to keep our eyes on the ball and not, like the NFL today, players celebrate after every down of the ball without having won the game yet.
