UT Lawn Walkout - Official Joint Statement
The Texas Muslim Students Association and Nueces Mosque Stand In Solidarity with Palestine and the Participants of The University of Texas at Austin Lawn Walkout on April 25, 2024
We strongly condemn the actions of the University of Texas, Department of Public Safety, and Governor Greg Abbott during the peaceful April 24 student-led walkout. We hold Governor Abbott and the University of Texas President Jay Hartzell accountable for the excessive treatment used against students as they called for an end to UT funding contributing to the Palestinian genocide.
As students, it is unfathomable that we cannot feel safe expressing our concerns in the institution we receive our education from. President Hartzell and Governor Abbott's response to yesterdays events unquestionably shows that students cannot freely express their voices. Our activism continues due to the ongoing genocide in Gaza, with over 34,000 Palestinians killed. The use of police brutality and unwarranted arrests of 50+ innocent students is deplorable and unacceptable. The student movement will remain until our institution meets the demands for divestment and accountability in the genocide. We call on the University of Texas to acknowledge and address the concerns of its students as this institution continues to silence our voices.
We strongly encourage you to donate bail funds (Venmo: @psc_atx), contact CAIR Austin at 512-785-7105 for legal assistance, and call Travis County Jail at 512-854-9889 to demand the release of all arrestees.
Stay safe and vigilant, and continue to vocalize your support for the Palestinian cause. We will not remain silent in the face of genocide.
