IC Muharram Majlis 2025

June 26 July 7 | Nightly at 6 PM EST | 1447 / 2025

The Islamic Center at New York University has established the first Shia chaplaincy at any University in the United States and this Muharram we are looking for your support as we continue to make strides in building out our distinctive institution. Being Muslim these days is quite difficult and for young Muslims, it's that much harder.  Within the broader experience of marginalization that so many Muslims experience, Shia Muslims quite often find an absence of spaces for themselves on college campuses.

Muharram Majlis RSVP Today

Muharram the first month of the Islamic calendar demarcates a period of religious significance for Muslims across the globe, who annually commemorate the tragedy and martyrdom of Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala. Particular to Shia Muslim tradition, the first 10 days are historically spent mourning and reflecting upon the life of Hussain, leading up to his ultimate spiritual sacrifice along with his family and followers. Hussain is remembered through lamentation poetry, nightly gatherings, and various forms of cultural expression. Muharram is not only centered around sorrow, but is also a time in which our community comes together to embrace the themes of unity and harmony, as well as the themes of justice, love, beauty, generosity, compassion and fidelity to the Prophet and his family, as embodied by his beloved grandson Hussain.

Dr. Sheikh Faiyaz Jaffer is the Executive Director for the Islamic Center and University Chaplain at New York University. He holds a doctorate in education from NYU, with a focus on the identity development of Muslim Minorities demographics in the United States. Pursuing the classical course of Islamic education, he studied in the Seminary of Karbala, Iraq, one of the most prominent centers for Islamic learning. As a faith leader and social activist, Dr. Sheikh Jaffer has lectured at various universities, seminars, and workshops across the United States, Canada, Europe, East Africa, and the Middle East. As a highly sought-after lecturer and religious leader, he regularly leads prayer services and delivers sermons across North America. Due to the political and social climate, he has been making strides in the greater New York area by taking part in several interfaith seminars and discussions with the goal of increasing dialogue with faith leaders. In 2019, Dr. Sheikh Jaffer co-founded Pillars of Peace, a non-profit established in order to address a gap in appropriate services for survivors of domestic and gender-based violence from all backgrounds and in particular within the Muslim community. In addition to his roles at NYUs Islamic Center, Dr. Shaykh Jaffer serves as a Professor of Public Service of NYUs Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, where he teaches courses on Islamic Law and Islamic Spirituality and a Visiting Professor at the Bayan Graduate School.
