Assalaamu alaykum,
I hope you all are doing well and taking benefit from these blessed days of Dhul Hijjah - may Allah accept from all of us. Ameen.
As we approach the end of the month, I wanted to share some updates with you all regarding transitions that will be taking place at the Islamic Center at NYU.
Updates On My Departure
My official last day at NYU will be this Saturday, May 31st, 2025 inshallah. I will continue to be involved throughout the Summer in an informal capacity, leading Eid/jummah prayers and halaqas, sending out a few more emails relevant to Udhiyah/Qurbani, providing pastoral care and support, and being involved in other tasks where needed. Friday, August 15th will be the last jummah khutbah Ill give at NYU inshallah. Starting in September, Ill begin leading jummah prayers at The Islamic Center of New York City. There are some farewell events that are being planned for August as well that we will be sending information out on in the coming weeks - it would be great to see you all there.
Operational Changes at the Islamic Center
Mashallah, as of Sunday, June 1st, Shaykh Faiyaz Jaffer ([email protected]) will be taking on the role of Executive Director and Amira Shouman ([email protected] ) will be taking on the role of Senior Director. Alhamdulillah, aside from the blessing of working with them both for so many years, having them as a brother and sister has been an even bigger blessing. Im grateful that they will be stepping up to take on these much-deserved positions and am confident that they will take ICNYU to much bigger and better places inshallah. Please join me in congratulating them and making special duaa for them both - may Allah grant them tawfiq, increase them in strength and sincerity, and make each of us always from the best of their supporters. Ameen.
Search For New Chaplain & Administrator
To fill the remaining gaps on our staff, there are two new roles at the Islamic Center that are currently open for application:
- Office Manager: https://apply.interfolio.com/167599
- Assistant Chaplain: https://apply.interfolio.com/167604
Please help us spread the word on both of these positions and apply if you think you would be a good fit.
Moving Forward
Many of you have asked the best ways to be in touch. Because I am an alum of NYU, this email address will continue to work inshallah. You can also be in touch with me at [email protected] or [email protected] or fill out this short form with your name and email address and Ill keep you updated on things going forward inshallah.
I dont have words that can fully encapsulate everything Ive felt in serving this community. As I prepare to close this chapter after 20 unforgettable years with the Islamic Center at NYU, my heart is filled with immense gratitude, love, and humility.
When I first stepped into this role, I could not have imagined the journey we would take togetherhow we would grow not just in numbers, but in spirit, compassion, and resilience. Together, we have built a community rooted in mercy, dignity, and service. We have stood for justice, supported one another through hardships, celebrated countless joys, and created a home where so many could feel seen, heard, and valued.
As I mentioned before, a big part of what informs my decision is my desire to build as much as I can while I still have the time to do so. Every day we see the challenges that Muslims face and the need for stronger institutions and services. We've been able to meet a lot of our goals and objectives in ensuring the long-term stability of what we do on campus and my hope is to take what I've learned in my time here and apply it to other projects and initiatives for our community's growth inshallah.
It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve you all and I will carry every conversation, every prayer, every tear shed and smile shared with me forever. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of it all. Allah has blessed me with a lot in my life alhamdulillah and one of the blessings I've been most grateful for is the opportunity to serve a community like this one. I love each of you more than you know and am excited and committed to continue to build for us for as long as Allah allows me to do so. All I ask is for your prayers in helping to achieve that.
Barakallahu feekum - may Allah bless you and your loved ones always and continue to bless our Islamic Center at NYU. Ameen.
