Jumuah Mubarak

Jumuah Mubarak to our dearbrothers and sisters!

Do you carry the dunya (worldly life) in your hand or in your heart? Ustadh Tariq shares a moving reflection from our Heart Softener series on whether the dunya holds sway over us.

For the people of Allah the Exalted, the dunya is not a concern but rather their Almighty Creator is.The dunya and its provisions cause them unease. This sentiment was beautifully exemplified by one of the Prophet's wives, peace and blessings be upon him, when she received war spoils from Umar ibn Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him.

Upon seeing the vast amount of wealth, she presumed it was to be shared among all the wives. Overwhelmed, she cried out for mercy from Allah the Exalted. Her servant informedher that this wealth was intended for her alone, as the other wives had already received their portions.

Fearful, she asked to cover the wealth with a cloth and instructed her servant to distribute it to the Muslims repeatedly. After several rounds, the servant reminded her that the wealth was halal for her and she had a right to it.

The Mother of the Believers, as the wives of the Prophet are known, asked for the cloth to be lifted and saw that much wealth still remained. Ustadh Tariq highlights the remarkable nature of her response: she made a du'a (supplication) asking Allah the Exalted not to let her live to see such a fitna (trial/temptation) again.

SubhanAllah! Living with the Prophet , all the wives had become accustomedto an austere lifestyle, sometimes subsisting on just dates and water. For them, wealth was a test and a trial.

How many of us would have this same perspective or be able to respond by distributing such wealth to others to the point that we have to be reminded to keep some for ourselves? Who's not to say that we wouldn't ask for more wealth?

But, as Ustadh Tariq succinctly puts it, this is the difference between the people of Allah and the people of the dunya.

Let us aspire and grow to be people of Allah.
