Reflecting on University Encampments

Assalam alikom wa rahmatu Allah wa barakatuh.

Dear brothers and sisters,

What do we learn from Prophet Musa (AS) as he stood in front of the Pharaoh, despite his fear, and demanded that he ends his oppression of the Jewish people and allow them to be free? What do we learn from the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) when he faced Quraish tribal leaders, reproaching them for their injustices? What do we learn from the great scholar Ahmad bin Hanbal when he challenged the Khalifas assertions on the nature of the Quran when dissention was not tolerated by the state?

And what do we learn from the more contemporary examples of many leaders of Islamic movements all over the Muslim world who faced unjust imprisonment or execution in the past century due to their opposition to oppression and tyranny?

What we learn from all the above is that speaking truth to power has long been the way of the righteous and a timeless necessity for justice to spread in the world. The Prophet (SAW) when asked what is the greatest Jihad (struggle)? he responded: Speaking truth and justice to a tyrant

: .

Student encampments have risen in many of the campuses/universities across our country. These encampments are part of a global student-led movement that are challenging authorities and governments to stand for justice and for the human rights of the Palestinian people. They are making moral demands from their university administrations to divest from investments supporting the ongoing genocide. Many of the students participating are from the Muslim community, and many are not they are people of conscience who have come out to stand against oppression. The core value of justice is what unites all these people in this struggle.

As a Muslim community, we indeed have a religious obligation to support the voices that stand for justice, wherever these voices are. Peaceful protest is part of the fabric of our society and more importantly, has always been a mechanism of positive change and reform throughout human history. Needless to say, we do so in a manner consistent with our tradition and faith:refraining from indecency, violence or hate speech; respecting people and property; and maintaining the limits of Allah.

With this in mind, we must unite and seriously commit to supporting those who call for an end to oppression, illegal occupation, and genocide. In these troubled times, when we know we will stand in front of our Lord one day and be asked about what we did to support justice, ask yourself, how will you respond? Commit today to action that you will be pleased with on that day.

With warm regards,

Abdullatif Bakbak

MAC CONVENTION 2024 Highlights

With Palestine at the forefront of our hearts and mind

Alhamdulillah, by the tawfeeq of Allah (swt), MAC Convention 2024 was a gathering of thousands, with over 50 guest speakers and more than 60 lecture panel sessions, alongside an Educators' Conference, a vibrant children's program, and a unique new Youth Stream. The convention also featured an Expo highlighting Al Aqsa exhibit and One Ummah Awareness special booths, as well as a unique souk offering a carnival and culinary experiences.

At a time when the realities facing the ummah both locally in Canada and globally are evident, this convention served as a platform to bring the most critical issues and topics to the forefront through important conversations, allhumdulilah. We anticipate our community to translate the knowledge gained into meaningful actions within our communities, inshaAllah.

We are grateful to all of the volunteers, the entire team, speakers, guests, partners, sponsors, and every one of you who have contributed to bringing this convention to fruition. We also invite you to donate to support the cause of this convention. Looking ahead, we eagerly await MAC Convention 2025 and encourage you to stay tuned for details to come!

MAC Youth - Mississauga Chapter

The MAC Mississauga Chapter is one of the biggest Chapters in Canada, allhumdulilah. It hosts different MAC institutions such as Head Office, Olive Grove School (OGS), Olive Grove High School (OGHS), Al-Huda Weekend Islamic School, Islamic Community Center of Ontario (ICCO), and projects such as MAC Youth and MAC Youth Junior.

MAC Youth in Mississauga has three groups: Brothers' Youth Group (BYG), Sisters' Youth Group (SYG), and MAC Youth Sisterhood (MYS). These groups host weekly halaqas, various events throughout the year and annual camps (such as Camp Awakening and Camp Horizon). For more information, .

For this month, the MAC Youth - Mississauga Chapter would like to recognize one of its members: Rana El Fayez. Rana El Fayez is an active participant in the Missisauga chapter. As a high school student, Rana attended the Sisters Youth Group (SYG) and Camp Awakening. She fiercely turned from an attendee to an active dawah worker. Throughout her university years and now as a working professional, Rana is exceptionally active at the chapter and national level. In addition to leading SYG, Rana was recently the Amirah for Camp Awakening, participated in the convention planning team for the youth program, hosted the Ramadan youth show and much more.

Rana is committed to the dawah work and to support youth in our community. She exhibits commitment, sincerity and sacrifice in everything she does. Were grateful for Ranas active participation and pray that Allah swt blesses her efforts and rewards her.

Reward of Praying at Masjid Al Aqsa

It was narrated that Abu Dharr (RA) said: When we were with the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), we were discussing which is better: the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) or Bayt al-Maqdis (Holy House - Masjid Al Aqsa). The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: One prayer in my mosque is better than four prayers offered there (in Bayt al-Maqdis), and what a good place of prayer it is. Soon there will come a time when, if a man has a piece of land the size of a horses rope from which he can see Bayt al-Maqdis, that will be better for him than the whole world. Narrated by al-Haakim; he classed it as saheeh and al-Dhahabi and al-Albaaniagreed with him, as it says in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, at the end of the discussion on hadeeth no. 2902.

One prayer offered in the Prophets Mosque is equivalent to one thousand prayers (offered elsewhere), so one prayer offered in al-Masjid al-Aqsa is equivalent to two hundred and fifty prayers.

With regard to the well-known hadeeth that says that one prayer offered there is equivalent to five hundred prayers, this hadeeth is daeef (weak). See Tamaam al-Minnah by Shaykh al-Albaani (RA), p. 292.
