Dear Brothers andSisters,
Assalam alikom wa rahmatu Allah,
As we approach the greatest month of the year, there is an immense opportunity that awaits us.
As a community, and as an ummah, we are living in one of the most difficult periods in our history.
We watch as a genocide unfolds to our brothers and sisters in Gaza while our political leaders remain silent. Wefeel a sense of collective weakness of the ummah.
The Prophet (pbuh) gave us a stark warning about times such as these:
‘A time will come when nations will descend upon you like predators descend upon their prey.’ Someone asked: Is that because we will be few in number on that day? The Prophet (pbuh) responded: ‘You indeed will be great in number, but you will be like the foam of rushing water (ie lack weight or power). And Allah will remove from the hearts of your enemies the fear of your nation, and Allah will place in your hearts ‘al-wahn’ Someone asked: What is al-wahn oh Prophet of Allah. The Prophet (pbuh) responded: ‘love of this life (dunya) and hatred of death’.
This hadith reminds us that any weakness in our ummah starts with an internal weakness in our iman. As Allah (swt) says: Allah will not change the condition of a people, until they change the conditions of their own selves.
This is why Ramadan for us this year is an incredible opportunity....
Your brother,
Abdullatif Bakbak

Ottawa Chapter
The Ottawa Chapter of the Muslim Association of Canada is one of the first chapters in Canada and has deep roots in the community with several schools and centres as well popular programs for children. Hoping to address a need among children to make sense of the situation in Palestine, the MAC Youth Junior committee quickly stepped up to organize an age-appropriate workshop to help children better appreciate Palestine's religious significance and distinctive culture in a positive and supportive environment. Over 250 children attended "Discover Palestine" where they learned in an interactive manner about the people, food, geography, history, industry and more fromcommunity members who supported the activity with their time, materials, photographs, and artifacts. Even an artisanal Palestinian stitcher came to demonstrate the craft.
The children were also guided to constructive ways to help others who are facing difficulties including saying a special supplication for peace and in sending a letter to Minister Joly. They left with mementos but also positive memories and learning. The workshop was a great success and brought the community together in a positive way at a difficult time. Congratulations to the Youth Junior committee for showing us what can be done with a small group dedicated to serving Allah by serving others.
