Justice-Inspired Liberation Past, Present & Future

Assalam alikom ,

Dear brothers and sisters,

Justiceis a central pillar of Islam, rooted in the principle of Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah ). It transcends personal desires, societal trends, and even human legal systems. Justice in Islam is a moral imperative, guided by the accountability all humans owe to Allah, the Most Just, the Most Wise, and the Most Merciful. The Prophet Muhammad modeled this principle through a comprehensive system that safeguarded individual rights, upheld collective responsibilities, and remained firmly committed to truth. His noble companions, and the generations who followed, further exemplified how justice is not merely a legal construct but an enduring commitment to fairness and truth.

A Promise Fulfilled

This month, we have witnessed the fall of a tyrannical regime in Syriaone that oppressed its people for many decades. We praise Allah , who is the true Owner of Justice and the one who grants liberation to the oppressed. He reminds us in the Quran:

So the people that committed wrong were eliminated. And praise to Allh, Lord of the worlds. (Surat Al-Anm, 6:45)

As these divine promises unfold before us, we find renewed hope in the possibility of shaping a more just and liberated future.

And surely Allah will help those who support His cause**.** (Surat Al-Hajj, 22:40)

Lessons from History

This hope is further reinforced by our past. From Imad ad-Deen ( ) in the 12th century, who led the liberation of Syrian cities, to Nur ad-Deen ( ), who paved the way for the eventual liberation of Al-Aqsa under the leadership of Salahuddin al-Ayyubi ( ), history shows that decisive change is built on the collective labor and faith of generations. Their legacy reminds us that real transformation requires unwavering conviction, dedication, and unity.

Our Call to Action

Today, we ask: How are we constructing our homes, our communities, and our personal lives around the principles of Islamic justice? How are we preparing ourselves to be part of an Ummah that upholds fairness and truth in all spheres of life? We remember the Quranic command:

And say, Do [as you will], for Allah will see your deeds, and [so will] His Messenger and the believers. (Surat At-Tawbah, 9:105)

Let us pledge to be a generation that rises to this callone that roots its pursuit of justice in accountability to Allah .

The Code of Living: Our Role and Responsibility as Believers

Continuing from last week's reflection on verses 22:77-78, we delve further into the beautiful meanings of these verses.

"Strive in the cause of Allah as you ought to strive" Striving means exerting ones utmost effort to achieve a desired goal. Striving in the cause of Allah as one ought to strive entails complete adherence to Allah's commands and calling others to His path through all possible means. These include offering sincere advice, teaching, disciplining, rebuking, exhorting, and even fighting in His cause when necessary, always with wisdom and sincerity.

"So that the Messenger may be a witness over you, and that you may be witnesses over humanity."

The Prophet (PBUH) defines the path that the Muslim Ummah must follow, clearly distinguishing right from wrong. In turn, the Ummah assumes the responsibility of being witnesses over humanity. As the trustees of Allahs message, guided by its divine laws, education, and worldview, the Ummah fulfills this role for humanity at large. As trustees of Allah's message, guided by its laws, education, and worldview, we can only fulfill this responsibility by fully implementing Allah's message in our lives.

Islam is a timeless and balanced system that aligns seamlessly with human nature and capabilities, neither suppressing them nor leaving them unchecked. The great advantage of the divine way of life is that it guides humanity toward the highest level of perfection achievable in this life.Unlike systems solely focused on worldly pleasures or the pursuit of carnal desires, Islam elevates humanity by emphasizing sublime values. It aims to meet material needs while transcending them to achieve spiritual and moral excellence.

This is what Islam wants for humanity, under the wise stewardship of the community that upholds the divine message.
