As-Salaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh,

Dear community members,

Alhamdulillah, we are thrilled to announce the start of an Islamic book club at the Louisville Islamic Center. Its first meeting is this Sunday, February 2, immediately following the Asr prayer at 4:30 pm, which we hope to pray as a group before starting our group discussion. Please find the attached flyer for more details.

The purpose of the book club is to foster an environment of adult Islamic learning based on the timeless teachings of the most influential writers of the classical Islamic period, also known as the Islamic Golden Age (mid-7th century to the mid-13th century). We have decided to start with Imam Ghazl’s book, 'Banes of the Tongue'.

Here is what one of our community members and facilitator of the Book Club, Br. Khalid Kahloon has to say about this book:

"I studied this book during last year’s Ramadan and my only regret is why I did not study it sooner. His books have had a transformational effect on me. Given their transformational power, I simply do not understand why we were not taught these in schools and colleges as part of our Islamiyat curriculum. Anyway, it is never too late to learn now what we should have learned a long time ago."

Our tongue, weighing at about 2 ounces, is only about 0.1% of our body weight, but it has the potential to cause incalculable harm to our individual souls, our relationships, and our communities. Been there, done that.

In his book aft al-lisn, Imam Ghazali breaks down the mischiefs of the tongue into 20 easy-to-understand categories starting with “speaking about what does not concern you” and ending with “talking about knowledge as if one knows but one does not, especially about God and religious matters.”

By the end of this book discussion, you will begin to spot the difference between halal and haram speech and will learn strategies, as a result of our group discussion, on how to identify and cope with situations likely to lead to slippery slopes.

Feel free to join us even if you haven't read the book; your presence and participation are valued. Your insights and experiences will enrich our discussions and help us all grow.

We are looking forward to having all you help us kick off our Islamic book club. Thank you for being a part of this journey toward greater knowledge and understanding.

Allah grant benefit and success from our gatherings and learning. Ameen.

JazakAllahuKhairan,
River Road Masjid
