July 4 & 5
Asalaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,
The best way to start a new Islamic year is to start with renewed intentions and a clean slate. 🌱
The Prophet ﷺ was asked about fasting on the day of ‘Ashura (10th of Muharram), whereupon He said: “It expiates the sins of the preceding year” [Muslim]
🤔 What’s the significance of ‘Ashura?
Ibn Abbas (May Allah be Pleased with Him) narrated that:
“When the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madinah, the Jews were observing the fast on ‘Ashura, and they said, ‘This is the day when Moses became victorious over Pharaoh.’ On that, the Prophet ﷺ said to his companions, ‘You (Muslims) have more right to celebrate Moses' victory than they have, so observe the fast on this day.’”
[Sahih Al-Bukhari #4680]
💭 Why Fast the 9th and the 10th?
✍️ Scholars say that the Prophet ﷺ recommended we fast both 9th and 10th of Muharram in order to distinguish ourselves from the Jews and Christians.
Ibn 'Abbas reported that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) fasted on the day of 'Ashura and commanded that it should he observed as a fast, they (his Companions) said to him:
Messenger of Allah, it is a day which the Jews and Christians hold in high esteem. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: When the next year comes, God willing, we would observe fast on the 9th But the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) died before the advent of the next year. [Muslim]
