Itikaf is a spiritual retreat. During the last ten days of Ramadan, Muslims spend their days and night at the Masjid in order to ensure they are there for which ever night Layat al-Qadr occurs. I'tikaaf means to isolate oneself and adhere Dhikr of Allah (swt).
Narrated by Aisha(r), the wife of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam): The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) used to practice I'tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan till he died and then his wives used to practice It'ikaf after him.[Hadith No. 2026, Book of Itikaf, Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 3]
