Quran

The Night of Qadr is much better than one thousand months.

(Al-Qadr, Verse 3)

A night sought out by many as they stand in prayer, sit with hands raised and hearts full of hope. Laylat-ul-Qadr is the best, most powerful night of the year and one of accepted prayers. Seek it and find spiritual fortune alongside peace.

Hadith

Nu'aim bin Ziyad Abu Talhah (RA) said: "I heard An-Nu'man bin Bashir on the minbar in Hims saying: "We prayed Qiyam with the Messenger of Allah (SAW) during Ramadan on the night of the twenty-third until one-third of the night had passed, then we prayed Qiyam with him on the night of the twenty-fifth until one-half of the night had passed, then we prayed Qiyam with him on the night of the twenty-seventh until we thought that we would miss Al-Falah- that is what they used to call suhur."

(Sunan an-Nasa'i 1606, Book 20, Hadith 9)

The night prayer is not compulsory but as we seek Laylut-ul-Qadr during the last 10 nights of Ramadan, it is a great time to follow the Prophet (SAW)s example and pray most of the night. If you are unable to do this, try and catch the last third of the night.  Are you making the most of these last ten nights? Remember to pray for your loved ones, your past sins to be forgiven and your future to be on the straight path. Ask for good and seek refuge from evil. Make dua for the oppressed and those in tribulation such as our brothers and sisters in Palestine, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Kashmir and the Rohingya and Uyhghur Muslims. Pray for those who face their own daily trials such as struggling with food, expenses, with children and with their mental health. This world is a test and everyone's trials are different but they all need our duas, just as we need the duas of others. Pray for the ummah and know that you are in the duas of someone else too and we assure you, everything will be OK. Things will get better because Allah (swt) hears all our duas so open your heart and worship with sincerity during these blessed nights. And no matter how difficult things get, remember that after hardship comes ease. Alhamdulillah and Ameen to all your duas.

Make Sincere Dua for Laylatul Qadr

Laylatul Qadr or The Night of Power is a night during the month of Ramadan described in the Quran as better than a thousand months (Surah Al-Qadr, 97:3). Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, used to exert himself in devotion during the last ten nights of Ramaadan to a greater extent than at any other time, in the hopes of catching these exponential rewards.

The actual date is not known and subject to change each year. It is said that it is one of the last 10 nights, likely an odd number. Muslims strive to increase their devotion during this period with the hopes of reaping the full rewards of Laylatul Qadr. Imagine, any action done on this night reading the Quran, remembering Allah, making sincere Dua, giving in charity is better than doing the same action for one thousand months; that is more than 83 years, more than the average lifetime!

Dua Is the Weapon of the Believer

Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

There is nothing that is more noble in the sight of Allah than Dua.

(Tirmidhi)

Dua is then the essence of worship, a direct link between human beings and their Lord. When the believer supplicates, s/he is acknowledging the ultimate sense of humility, freeing him/herself of arrogance, surrendering to the power of Allah Almighty.

In the Quran, we are also promised that Allah hears.

And when My servants ask you concerning Me, then (answer them), I am indeed near to them. I respond to the supplications of the supplicant when he calls on Me.

(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:186)

Dua is commonly referred to as the weapon of the believer. In another Hadith, Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, encouraged us to:

Ask Allah from His bounty, for verily Allah loves to be asked.

(Tirmidhi)

Watermelon Nutrition Facts

Watermelon has everything you need to beat the scorching summer heat! Crunchy, delicious, and juicy, the fruit indeed is a great source of much-needed electrolytes, and water to quench thirst while boosting your body with antioxidant lycopene and vitamin-A to lessen body temperatures.

Botanically, the fruit belongs to the family of Cucurbitaceae, in the genus: Citrullus, and is related to the other same family members such as cantaloupesquash, and pumpkin that run as vines on the soil. It is widely grown in many tropical countries where it is one of the major commercial fruit crops.

Botanical name: Citrullus lanatus.

Watermelon fruit, cut sections (Citrullus lunatus).

Watermelon is native to Southern African countries from where it spread to the rest of the tropical and subtropical world. After a couple of weeks of seedling, the plant bears many yellow flowers that may require honeybees for pollination.

The fruit features a smooth, thick, green, or yellow rind with light-green, or gray vertical stripes, adorning its surface. Internally, the flesh is juicy and comes in different colors like pink, red, or yellow, depending upon the cultivar type. Numerous small, black seeds are embedded in the middle-third portion of the flesh, near its core.

Watermelon has a neutral flavor, and its taste is somewhat described as plain-sweet water (light sugar syrup). Its flesh is soft yet crunchy, unlike the soft, creamy texture of muskmelons.

Different varieties of watermelons are being cultivated across the planet featuring variations in their size, shape, and flesh color (red, orange, and yellow). In Japan, the black-skinned Toma watermelons (Densuke watermelon) are famous for their sweeter-than-usual taste in comparison to normal melons, and therefore, fetch higher prices.

10 Amazing Health Benefits of Watermelon

Please visit this page to view the infographic featuring watermelon nutrition facts per 100g**: Watermelon nutrition infographic....**

  1. Rich in electrolytes and water content, melons are nature's gift to beat the tropical summer thirst.

  2. Watermelons are very low in calories (just 30 calories per 100 g) and carry negligible amounts of fats. Nonetheless, they are plentiful in numerous health-promoting phytonutrients and antioxidants essential for optimum health.

  3. Watermelon nutrition profile contains vitamin-A and lycopene, which are powerful natural antioxidants. 100 g fresh fruit provides 569 IU or 19% of daily-required levels of vitamin-A. It is one of the essential vitamins needed for healthy vision and immunity.

  4. Vitamin A is also required for maintaining healthy mucosa and skin. Consumption of natural fruits rich in vitamin A is known to protect from lung and oral cavity cancers.

  5. It is rich in antioxidant flavonoids like -carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and cryptoxanthin. These antioxidants have been found to offer protection against colon, prostate, breast, endometrial, lung, and pancreatic cancers.

  6. Phytochemicals present in watermelons like lycopene and carotenoids have the ability to help protect cells and other structures in the body from oxygen-free radicals.

  7. Watermelon is an excellent source of carotenoid pigment, lycopene and indeed, superior to raw red tomato. 100 g of fresh melon provides 4532 g lycopene, whereas this value is only 2573 g for tomatoes. Studies suggest that lycopene offers protection to the skin against harmful UV rays.

  8. Watermelon fruit is a good source of potassium; Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that helps control heart rate and blood pressure. It, thus, offers protection against stroke and coronary heart disease.

  9. Furthermore, it contains a good amount of vitamin-B6 (pyridoxine), thiamin (vitamin B-1), vitamin-C, and manganese. Consumption of foods rich in vitamin C helps the body develop resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful oxygen-free radicals. The human body uses manganese as a co-factor for the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase.

  10. Total measured antioxidant strength (ORAC value) of watermelon is 142 mol TE/100 g.
