Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States, marking a pivotal moment in the country's ongoing journey toward equality and justice. It's a day to celebrate freedom, reflect on progress towards racial equality, and recommit to justice for all.
At ISB and as a community, we honor the journey towards freedom and reflect on the work still ahead. While we have come far, the road to true equality and justice continues.
A significant number of the enslaved Africans brought to America were Muslims. Historians estimate that up to 40% of the enslaved Africans were followers of Islam. They carried with them rich cultural and religious traditions that have left an indelible mark on American history. Figures like Omar ibn Said and Ayuba Suleiman Diallo are just a few of the many who maintained their faith despite immense adversity.
As we celebrate Juneteenth, we recognize that the struggle for freedom and justice for Black Americans impacts all of us. The legacy of Black resistance and resilience has paved the way for civil rights advancements that benefit all marginalized communities.
Let us also remember the powerful words of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (): There is no virtue for an Arab over a non-Arab, nor for a non-Arab over an Arab, nor for a white person over a black person, nor for a black person over a white person, except by righteousness.

Let's stand in solidarity and continue the fight for freedom and justice.
