And establish prayer and give zakat, and whatever good you put forward for yourselvesyou will find it with Allah; surely Allah sees what you do. (Qur'an 2:110)

What is Zakat?

Zakat al-Mal is a 2.5% of the net wealth that a person holds for a year. Zakat al Mal is only required once a Muslim reaches a certain financial threshold known as nisab. If a Muslim doesnt reach this threshold, Zakat Al-Mal isnt required on him or her. It can be made at any time. As the blessing for giving is multiplied, many opt to pay their Zakat al-Mal during Ramadan.

Zakat al-Fitr is a charity that is collected for those in need it can be made any time in Ramadan and is highly recommended to be paid before Eid al-Fitr prayers. Zakat al-Fitr is $20/family member of each family, including unborn children in utero.

Do You Qualify for Fidya?

Fidya is made when someone is ill or of extreme age and cannot fast for the required number of days during the month of Ramadan, and will not be able to make up for the fast in their lifetime.

In Ramadan, the Fidya must be paid for each day missed in the amount of $20/day. So, if one missed the whole of Ramadan, $600 of Fidya will be paid to go towards the needy and less fortunate members of the community. However, if an individual falls into the qualifying category of someone who should pay Fidya, and they themselves are needy or are not financially capable of paying that amount, then he/she is exempt from paying Fidya to compensate for their missed fasts.
