***An Important Update from the ICO Board***
New Islamic Calendar Year: 1446
ICO prays for our community and the entire Ummah, a new year of blessings and peace. Rasulullah would fast many days in the blessed month of Muharram. Specifically, the 10th of Muharram (Tuesday, July 16th) is known as the day of Ashura, and fasting on this day forgives the sins of the previous year as per Rasulullah . It is also advised to fast the day before or after Ashura as well.
ICO would like to remind the community that our events and activities are as active as ever! From Imam Tariq Rasheeds weekend classes on Tasawwuf, Hadith, and Tafsir to Mufti Sulaimans weekly Wednesday Majlis and Sunday Windermere Halaqah to our Biweekly Sisters Halaqah to our Friday Youth Class to our Toddler Story Time, there is something at ICO for brothers and sisters of all ages and for every member of the family! All are encouraged to attend and benefit from our weekly events and activities at ICO.

It was in the time of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the companions were consulted, and it was decided that the Islamic lunar calendar would be based on the year wherein the Hijrah took place, marking the migration of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam from Makkah to Madinah.
This past Sunday was the 1st of Muharram, the start of the Islamic New Year. This marks 1,446 years since the Hijrah. This is a period wherein we should reflect upon the sacrifices that were made during the Hijrah, by Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam (Peace and blessins be upon him) and his companions, all for the pleasure of Allah Tal. Behind the migration of each one of them lies a unique and inspiring story, filled with sacrifices and parting ways with people and things they held close to their hearts. Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) himself expressed his love for Makkah. He addressed her by taking an oath on the name of Allah and saying that he would have never left had he not been forced to.
Nabi (Sallallahu Alyhi wa Sallam) is reported to have said:
and a (true) migrant is someone who migrates away from what Allah has forbidden. (Muslim)
Memories of the Hijrah should revive within us this very spirit of sacrificing for the sake of Allah Tal and, in turn, translate into our migration away from sins towards His obedience.
Additionally, the month of Muharram has been described as Allahs month, wherein optional fasts are extremely beloved. The fast on the 10th of Muharram (which would fall on Tuesday, the 16th of July) has been given the virtue of expiating the sins of the past year. It is the day wherein Musa (Alyhis Salaam) was saved from the tyrant Firawn, and Nh (Alyhis Salaam) was saved from the flood. It was in gratitude for these favors that the fast was originally obligatory and later abrogated to a recommended fast. The fast should be coupled with a day before or a day after, as instructed by our Master Nabi Sallallahu Alyhi wa Sallam.
May Allah Tal bless us and allow us to be from those who maximize the opportunities He blesses us with!
Bimillhir Rahmnir Rahm ("In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful")
We have just recently entered the month of muharram ending the Islamic Year of 1445 AH and marking the start of the new year, 1446 AH. Often times we make goals for the New Year which have to do with the Dunya, the matters of this world. However we cannot forget about the goals we need to make for our self-improvement as Muslims. Nowadays we look up to celebrities and we make goals to become like them. Unfortunately we forget that we already have figures in are religion that sacrificed so much for us and for Islam that we easily forget about. Our blessed Nabi, Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, the best of all creations, the one who sacrificed everything and went through so much hardship for us. Just as we make goals for the Dunya every year, lets make goals to become better Muslims starting now. By taking inspiration from the blessed companions of the Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam we can focus on the six main qualities they all shared!
The first, Iman, the firm Convicition in the Kalimah, Lla ilaha illAllah Muhammadur Rasulullah, and that anything that takes place in this entire existence is by the will of Allah subhana wa ta'ala. The second, Salah, making sure that we fufill the five times obligatory prayers with concentration. The third, Ikhlas, having sincere intentions in every that everything we do is solely for Allah. The fourth, Ilm and Zikr, striving to gain Knowledge about Islam and Remembering Allah subhana wa ta'ala through practicing everything we know. The fifth, Ikromul muslimin, respecting and fulfilling the rights of our Muslim Brothers and Sisters. Finally the sixth, Dawat, reminding our fellow Muslims about islam and well as spreading it to others who have not heard or accepted the message of Islam. Inshallah by implementing these six qualities within our lives we can become better practicing Muslims and inspire others to strive for better as well.
