What is Dhul Hijjah?

By Sheikh Mustafa Umar

Dhul Hijjah is the last month of the Islamic lunar calendar, starting on June 7, 2024, depending on the Hajj announcement. The month is significant because it includes Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam, which every Muslim must perform once in their lifetime.

The First Ten Days: The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are particularly special, as good deeds performed during this time are greatly rewarded. Muslims are encouraged to increase their worship, including fasting, praying, reading the Qur'an, giving charity, and avoiding negative behaviors. The tenth day is Eid, a day of celebration on which fasting is not permitted.

Cutting Hair and Nails: There is a debate among scholars regarding cutting hair and nails during the first ten days. Some believe it should be avoided if intending to sacrifice an animal, while others say it is permissible, citing different prophetic traditions.

Fasting on the 9th Day: The 9th day, known as the Day of Arafah, holds special importance. Pilgrims gather at Arafah, and it is recommended for non-pilgrims to fast on this day, as it is believed to atone for sins of the past and future year.
