Muharram: A New Year And A Fresh Start
Assalamu Alaikum,
The Prophet said: Observe the fast of shr and oppose the Jews by fasting a day before it or after it (Musnad Ahmed)
Alhamdulillah, Allah has allowed us to witness yet another new Islamic year.
We pray to Allah that this year is filled with barakah for all of us. Here are a few actions we can perform during the month of Muharram:
- Fasting - Abdullah bin Abbaas (radhiyallahu anhuma) reports: I did not see Rasulullah anxiously await the fast of any virtuous day more than the day of shr.(Bukhari)
- Spending - Rasulullah said: Whoever expands his expenditure on his family on the day of shr, Allah will inflate his sustenance for the rest of that year (Shuabul Iman)
- Seeking Forgiveness - Rasulullah said: In the month of Muharram there is a day in which Allah forgave a nation (Banu Israaeel) and He will forgive others on this day (as well). (Tirmidhi)
9th and 10th of Muharram corresponds to the 15th and 16th of July.
Thus, by fasting on this day, Allhs mercy and pardon will be showered upon one. The misdeeds that one committed will be pardoned through his fasting.
One will raise in rank by performing this deed. With the coming of the new year, there is an opportunity for one to expiate what happened in the year prior.
The lapses and misdeeds that one may have committed will be forgiven when one fasts in Muarram, most especially on the Day of shr.
in sha Allah lets all make the intention to fast all three days. If we cannot, lets at least be sure to fast on the 9th of Muharram (Monday, July 15th) just as our beloved Prophet did.

- Jumu'ah traffic control: 12:30 PM to 2 PM
- Assisting with donation boxes
- Clean up after Jumu'ah
