United We Stand: Donate to Help End Domestic & Gender-Based Violence

salaam alaykum,

I hope youre doing well and are having a blessed month of Ramadan thus far.

As we have entered into the best of nights and the best of days during the course of this Holy Month, Im currently requesting you for your help and support Pillars of Peace, as we work toward an eradication of domestic and gender-based violence in our communities. There are serious ramifications to the impact that domestic violence has in so many homes and communities, and with our work together, we can try to make a difference in the lives of so many.

In my work, I have had countless women reach out to me, looking for someone to share their stories to and someone to believe them in regards to the abuse they have received. Many of these stories have directly struck my heart, as victims have reached out from all parts of the country just looking for a way out of their distress and cycle of abuse. On one occasion, I asked a young lady why she came from the west coast all the way to New York City, and she told me she was a convert, and could not find anyone to help her. And she knew that if she had walked through the doors of our community, she would find a resource ready to hear her story and support her.

The reality is that, on average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States and during the course of one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men. The Muslim community is not absolved from these statistics. There are hundreds of women and children who are victims of abuse and with our efforts during these remaining days and nights of the blessed month of Ramadan, we can be that difference.

That's where you come in. Im reaching out for your support. Lets use the inspiration that we have gained during the course of this blessed month by means of prayer and worship to be a transformative tool in making a difference in our community.

What Can We do?

1- Be a Real Believer: The Messenger of God (s) is the mercy to the worlds and mercy, compassion and love starts with our families. In the prophetic hadith, he states, the best of you are the best to your women, and I am the best to my women. How can we truly claim to be a believer if we have the audacity to strike our wives our children?!

2- Cultivate: We cant allow for the rhetoric that demeans women to perpetuate and we need to shift a narrative around Islamic theology, history and law to look through a lens of ethics, and a recognition of time and place.

3- Build: God has created us with the ability to do more than we think. Your ears can be a solace for a member of your community who needs someone to listen. Your tongue can be the means to speak up for those who dont have a voice. Your wealth can help build the institutions that support DV work.

We need to be better, and we have the ability to start with ourselves.today. Please help us stop domestic and gender based violence and support Pillars of Peace today.

If you prefer to send a check, checks can be written out to:
