Asalaamu alaykum community members,
If you receive a call from someone identifying themselves as an ICCA member who asks you to provide them with a code of any sort, DO NOT SPEAK TO THEM. Hang up the phone.
It is a scammer trying to take control of your WhatsApp so that he can contact people in your WhatsApp groups and ask them for money. This scam has targeted numerous Muslims and Muslim leaders in recent months. It is important to be vigilant. Never give any callers a code or send them money. If you see a phone number with area code 234 or 742-389-3938 or 581-614-7796, this is likely a scammer.
There is no need for you to leave any ICCA WhatsApp groups. The phone numbers being used to make these calls are not part of ICCA WhatsApp groups and we have removed the members who have been hacked and not yet taken back control of their WhatsApp. But the scam calls may continue for some time because one a scammer tricks a single person, they get access to their contact list and can save the information to use later.
Please exercise caution when answering phone calls. It is better to ignore suspicious calls from someone you don't know.
