ICSC Statement: Standing Firm in Faith and Mercy
So do not weaken and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are [true] believers. (Quran 3:139)
The Islamic Center of Southern California recognizes that we are entering a defining moment in American historyone that brings new fears, yet also new responsibilities. For many of us, this is an era unlike any weve experienced. From the streets of our cities to the halls of our universities and childrens classrooms, we are witnessing injustices unfoldagainst Muslims, yes, but also against many of our fellow Americans who dare to stand against oppression.
We are shaken by the continuous violence unfolding in Gazafunded by our tax dollarsand we mourn the lives lost, while the world looks away. We are outraged by the beatings and arrests of students and individuals defending the sanctity of life, enjoining good, and forbidding evil. We are disheartened by the suppression of voices through unjust means, and by the piercing silence of those who once stood boldly for justicenow retreating when the stakes are high.
But the Quran reminds us:
O you who believe! Stand firm for justice as witnesses for Allah even if it is against yourselves, your parents, or close relatives (Quran 4:135).
This is our reminder that even when it is difficult, even when it comes at a cost we should always stand firm for justice.
The days of seeing Muslims solely as immigrants navigating an unfamiliar system are behind us. Today, American Muslims are elected officials, doctors, teachers, artists, organizers, and neighbors. We are no longer on the margins vulnerablewe are at the heart of this nation. And we are not alone. Our allies, many of whom have marched, organized, and struggled alongside us for decades, firmly stand with us.
This is our timenot to retreat in fear, but to step forward in mercy. As Muslims, we were sent not to be bystanders in the darkness, but to bring hope and strength into light.
And We have not sent you, [O Prophet], except as a mercy to all the worlds. (Quran 21:107)
Injustice is not new. The Quran reminds us of Pharaohs tyranny, of the arrogance of past nations, of the trials faced by prophets and believers. And yet, with patience and faith, truth always prevails.
put your trust in Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely upon Him. (Quran 3:159)
So we say this to our community:
Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear (Quran 2:286).
Do not lose hope. Do not retreat into fear. This is the moment to leadwith wisdom, compassion, and courage. Stand up for what is right, not just for Muslims, but for all people suffering under oppression. Let your character shine. Let your service speak. Let your mercy be your legacy.
We must continue our civic responsibilities as members of a nation founded on liberty and justice for all. We must also prepare spiritually. Strengthen your connection with God. Let your soul be nourished by prayer, service, community and steadfastness.
Your Lord has not forsaken you, nor has He detested [you]. And the Hereafter is better for you than the first [life]. (Qur'an 93:34)
Let this be the era where Muslims are knownnot for being fearful victimsbut for being faithful, principled, and merciful.
May The Almighty guide, protect, and unite us as one ummah, under God, led with mercy and compassion, upholding liberty, dignity and justice, for all.
