Islamic Center of Southern California Statement on Recent Immigration Enforcement Actions In & Around Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES As a house of worship rooted in faith, justice, and compassion and located in the cultural heart of Los Angeles the Islamic Center of Southern California (ICSC) affirms our commitment to the well-being and dignity of all individuals impacted by the recent immigration enforcement operations in and around our city.
While matters of immigration and national security remain complex and multifaceted, we cannot overlook the deeply human consequences of enforcement measures that instill fear and destabilize families. Behind the headlines are real people parents, children, community members, and people of faith who contribute meaningfully to the life of our city.
Just as we recently witnessed students and civic leaders raise their voices in peaceful protest for justice in Gaza, we now see another moment of collective concern, as communities seek to ensure that compassion and due process are not lost in the pursuit of policy.
Los Angeles thrives because of its diverse communities, many of whom arrived seeking safety, opportunity, and a chance to build a better future. Among them are teachers, health workers, business owners, public servants, and neighbors who shape the social and economic fabric of our city.
We recognize the role of law in maintaining order and national integrity. However, broad enforcement tactics that create widespread fear can erode trust and stand in contrast to our citys values and our faiths call to honor the inherent dignity of every person.
We have certainly honored the children of Adam (Quran 17:70)
Indeed, We created humankind in the best of stature. (Qur'an 95:4)
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to Be merciful to those on Earth, and Allah will have mercy on you. (Tirmidhi)
As a nonprofit religious institution, our mission is to offer spiritual support, uphold the moral teachings of our tradition, and promote the values of mercy and justice for all, regardless of background, belief, or birthplace. We encourage our elected leaders to uphold our shared values of compassion, family unity, and fairness.
We also call on our broader community to respond with mercy: through prayer, through acts of service, and a steadfast commitment to justice in the face of hardship. Our faith teaches us not to turn away in times of difficulty, but to stand firmly, with grace and integrity, for what is right.
Whoever sees an injustice, let them change it with their hand; if they cannot, then with their voice; and if they cannot, then with their heart and that is the weakest of faith. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Sahih Muslim
And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to all of humanity. (Qur'an 21:107)
May we remain committed to justice, grounded in compassion, and united in our prayer for a more merciful and inclusive future. May our city continue to be a place of dignity and refuge for all.
In faith and solidarity,
The Islamic Center of Southern California
