I didn’t grow up Muslim — but I grew up with Islam

I wish everyone could see what I saw

Salam Masjid plus,

Sometimes I think back to when I was 9 years old, when my best friend Arub first invited me into her world.

She was Muslim, and through her, I began to experience Islam not as a religion of rules, but as a way of life full of love, warmth, and community. Her family welcomed me like one of their own. I joined in on Eid celebrations, laughed through henna nights, and tasted the most delicious, spicy foods I had ever had.

Those memories stayed with me. They shaped how I see the world — and they taught me the beauty of a faith so many still misunderstand.

Now I’m 37. And when I see people speak about Islam with fear or judgment, it breaks me.

They just don’t know.

They haven’t seen what I saw.

My name is Monica, and I’m volunteering with GainPeace. On this last odd night of Ramadan, I’m asking you to join me in supporting their work — so we can create the kind of experiences I was lucky enough to have, for those who never got the chance.

Join Me — Support GainPeace

That’s why GainPeace is so important.

They’re helping others see Islam the way I did — through real stories, human connection, and truth.

Because understanding matters,

Monica Niro

Gain Peace Volunteer

P.S. I’m not Muslim — but I’ve seen the beauty of Islam, and I want others to see it too. Join me in supporting GainPeace tonight.
