A Note to Our Community
As-salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah,
We sincerely apologize for the audio issue during todays live stream. We know many of you tune in every Friday seeking guidance, connection, and spiritual grounding, and we deeply regret any inconvenience this may have caused. Your understanding and compassion mean a great deal.
Although the recording could not be salvaged, we want to honor and share the powerful message delivered by Dr. Ahmed Soboh during todays khutbah a reminder of Allahs vast mercy, the deep hope woven throughout the Quran, and the importance of reconnecting with it in our daily lives. A special thank you to Dr. Ahmed Soboh for helping us with this reflection.
Are We Fulfilling the Qur'an's Rights Upon Us?
Dr. Soboh began by quoting a well-known hadith of the Prophet :
Throughout the year, Allah sends waves of mercy seasons of blessings. So expose yourselves to them.
(al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, Tabarani)
He asked us to reflect:
Are we doing our part to stand in the path of Allahs mercy?
One of the most direct and accessible ways we do this is through our relationship with the Quran a book that honors the human being, uplifts our status, and serves as both a guide and a source of hope.
He reminded us of the six rights the Quran has upon us:
-
Recite it regularly
-
Memorize what we can
-
Understand its meaning
-
Reflect and feel its verses (Tadabbur)
-
Apply its teachings
-
Teach it to others
The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.
(Bukhari)
He emphasized that abandoning these rights could place us among those the Prophet warned about:
My people have abandoned this Quran.
(Quran 25:30)
What is Tadabbur (Contemplation)?
A central theme of the khutbah was tadabbur the personal, emotional reflection on the Quran that brings it to life in our hearts.
Then do they not reflect upon the Qur'an, or are there locks upon [their] hearts?
(Quran 47:24)
Unlike tafsir, which requires scholarly knowledge, tadabbur is for everyone. It is the goosebumps you feel when reading a verse. Its the tears that rise when a verse feels like it was sent just for you. Its the joy, the fear, the hope the feeling of divine speech landing in your heart.
Verses of Hope: Your Daily Spiritual Vitamin
Dr. Soboh encouraged the community to commit to one verse of hope every morning, just like we commit to vitamins or coffee something to strengthen our soul.
The Prophet used to pause when reciting verses about Paradise and make du, letting his heart and imagination engage with those promises. He taught us to smile when we read verses of mercy, to say Alhamdulillah when reminded of the ease of entering Jannah through sincere belief and righteous action.
He referenced this beautiful verse:
Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.
(Quran 39:53)
Each companion had a different verse they found most hopeful, reminding us that the Quran speaks to each heart differently. For example:
-
Uthman (RA) found hope in:
Inform My servants that I am the Forgiving, the Merciful.
(Quran 15:49) -
Ibn Abbas (RA) reflected on the verse that Allah will forgive all sins except for disbelief and defiance, showing that even serious sins can be forgiven with sincere repentance.
Hope in a World That Feels Unfair
Dr. Soboh also reminded us that in a world where injustice is widespread, the Quran gives us hope in Allahs ultimate justice:
And your Lord does not wrong anyone, [even] as much as the weight of an atom.
(Quran 4:40)
When courts fail, when systems are unjust, when pain seems to go unaccounted for Allahs justice never falters. And that knowledge alone brings comfort and optimism.
Being Human is Okay
The khutbah closed with an uplifting reminder: being human with doubts, sins, and flaws is part of our nature.
Even Prophet Ibrahim (AS) asked Allah how He resurrects the dead (Quran 2:260), and Allah responded with understanding, not shame.
Even the people of taqwa are described in the Quran as those who sin, regret, and return to Allah (Quran 3:135).
A Prayer for Our Hearts
We ask Allah to make us among those who read, feel, live, and teach His Book.
We ask Allah to make the Quran our spring in hard times, our guide when were lost, and our source of hope when the world feels heavy.
May He make us among those who never abandon the Quran and who see His mercy in every verse.
Ameen.
