Meet The Candidates

Asma Shuaib

I have been a part of the MAV community for more than 20 years. I believe strongly in the importance of giving back to my community and much of my work with MAV is rooted in my background in medicine and my experiences as a small business owner and mother. I began volunteering as a Girl Scout troop leader and founder in 2007, going on to volunteer in the MAV Sunday School as a teacher and administrator. In 2017, I initiated the creation of the MAV Health and Wellness Committee as a way to respond to the clear gaps I was seeing between members of our community and access to information and education about mental health and illness prevention. We have since expanded, holding free health clinics at the masjid as well as vaccination events with Giant Pharmacy. I am very proud of this work and the strides we have made in starting conversations among our masjid community about parenting, mental illness, abuse, and other critically important subjects. I have been a member of the MAV Board since 2021 and serve as the secretary of the board since 2023.I feel privileged to have been able to serve our community for so many years. I hope to continue doing so, and to continue responding to the needs of our community and working to make our masjid better for us and the generations who will come after us.

Imran Indorewala

Hello, my name is Imran Indorewala. I’ve been an active member of MAV since 2016 and a volunteer at ICCNOV (now Dar-Al-Salaam) since 2008. I’ve volunteered at Dar-Al-Salaam’s Sunday school as an administrator and now serve on the committee. I’ve also been involved in various ways at Dar-Al-Noor over the years, including distributing Iftar during Covid-19 and school bags and food.

As a committee member at Dar-Al-Salaam, I’ve made significant positive changes. For instance, I’ve increased our budget, reduced liabilities and expenses, and managed resources effectively to foster substantial growth.

If given the opportunity to serve as a board member of MAV, I’m confident I can bring substantial positive impact to both communities. With Allah’s (swt) guidance, I’m deeply committed to creating a thriving environment where both communities can grow spiritually and socially. I’ll do my best to serve Allah and his creation.

Khadija Athman

I currently serve as Board member and President of the Muslim Association of Virginia (MAV), and Vice Chair of PACE committee, bringing years of leadership experience to our community.

With a Master of Laws from George Washington University Law School, I have dedicated much of my career to advocating for social justice, ensuring that Muslims can freely practice their faith in workplaces, schools, and public spaces. My background spans civil rights, conflict resolution, and human resources, including my own HR consulting practice, where I help nonprofits and small businesses create thriving, compliant workplaces.

I am deeply committed to strengthening MAV’s governance, expanding our programs, and fostering a welcoming and inclusive community. I seek re-election to continue this work with integrity, vision, and a focus on long-term sustainability.
