Letter from Civic Engagement Committee Chair

Dear MCA Community,

We want to personally address the concerns many of you have shared about statements made during the recent candidate forum and share the current plan for course corrections. We appreciate those who were able to take time to speak with Brother Mesbah in person about this matter so far or who emailed us. We take these concerns seriously.

This particular forum was designed to help the community make informed decisions about who will represent us. While a number of viewpoints expressed were challenging to hear, they revealed important insights about the candidates' positions. The goal was to provide a window into who the candidates are - something we all need to know before casting our votes.

We should explain something important about our role as a 501(c)3 organization: we're legally required to maintain neutrality and invite all qualified candidates, regardless of their views. This isn't just a preference - it's fundamental to maintaining our nonprofit status. We invite you to review guidance on this matter here.

That being said, the community feedback has been very beneficial. Here are current course corrections identified:

  • Adding age advisories in the future so that families can be better empowered to make the decision to attend themselves. After all, today's youth will be tomorrow's voters.

  • Ensuring there is a part of the agenda reserved for the community to voice questions and comments directly to the candidates

  • Inviting the community to meet directly with the volunteers of our civic engagement committee and encourage more volunteers to join. Please message [email protected] if you are available to meet after Isha this Sunday November 3 or schedule a slot directly with its current volunteer chair via this link.

  • Removing the video of the forum from MCAs YouTube livestream

  • Additional ideas are welcome

We'd love to hear your thoughts on how we can make these forums even better - and how we can be more effective in being civically engaged. Please reach out to us at [email protected] and [email protected]. Better yet, consider volunteering to help shape these initiatives - your involvement makes us stronger.

Let's continue to keep our community and the ummah in our prayers as we navigate having a more effective civic engagement approach for the community.

Sincerely, The MCA Civic Engagement Committee
