Dear ICJC Community,

We are excited to share some updates from our ongoing partnership with the Blue Valley School District! This year, we began with meetings alongside BV Administrators to discuss ways to improve the school experience for our Muslim kids. Here is an overview of what is been accomplished so far and whats on the horizon:

  1. School Presentations: We had the opportunity to present "Islam 101" at two schools, speaking directly with teachers in smaller group sessions. This allowed for in-depth conversations, covering both the basics of Islam and the daily challenges our students face. (Some pictures from these sessions are attached!)

    • The principals of these schools shared details of the sessions with other school leaders at a recent meeting, and we look forward to hosting similar sessions in more schools.
  2. Dedicated Prayer Spaces: In response to student requests, BV Administration has worked with all middle and high schools to commit to having dedicated prayer spaces for Duhr and Friday prayers. Please click here for details of rooms by school.

    • Students need to let school administration know theyll be using the room.

    • Prayer times will be between 1pm and 2:30pm, adjusting for class schedules as needed within that time frame.

    • We kindly remind students to use the spaces respectfully, only for prayers and follow any school rules.

  3. Ramadan Accommodations: Ramadan will likely take place from March 1st to 30th this year. Schools have been informed of these dates for awareness, and during Ramadan:

    • Students who are fasting can skip lunch and use the library or another designated area (please work with your respective school admins)

    • Middle school principals are working to reschedule the 1-mile PE run out of the month of March, so students will not need to run while fasting.

  4. Eid-ul-Fitr: Eid is expected on Sunday, March 30th, or Monday, March 31st. In recognition:

    • The district will ensure no state assessments or major exams are scheduled on March 31st or April 1st.

    • Teachers will be encouraged to avoid major in-class tests or projects/activities on these dates.

    • Please use Religious Holiday when marking absences for Eid. Click here to view screenshot example.

Additionally, we are active members of the Blue Valley DEI Advisory Board, providing feedback to support inclusive practices across the district. We encourage parents to stay connected with their school principals and staff as we continue to engage at the district level.

We value your feedback! Please use  to share any thoughts or suggestions.

Thank you for your support and collaboration!

Warm regards,
ICJC Board of Trustees
