Dhul-Hijjah

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh

Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Clifton Mosque community,

Dhul-Hijjah is the twelfth and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar and holds great significance in Islam. It is a sacred month that carries immense blessings and opportunities for worship. One of the main reasons Dhul-Hijjah is highly regarded is due to the occurrence of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, which takes place during the first ten days of this month.

The Hajj Pilgrimage: Dhul-Hijjah is when millions of Muslims from around the world gather in the holy city of Mecca to perform the Hajj pilgrimage. Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and is an obligatory act of worship for physically and financially capable Muslims.

The Day of Arafah: The ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah is known as the Day of Arafah. It is considered one of the most important days in the Islamic calendar. Pilgrims performing Hajj gather on the plains of Arafah, where they engage in supplication, reflection, and worship. The sincere prayers made on this day are likely to be accepted by Allah. Even for those not performing Hajj, fasting on the Day of Arafah is highly recommended, as it carries great rewards and expiates sins of the previous year and the year to come, in shaa Allah.

Eid al-Adha: The tenth day of Dhul-Hijjah marks the celebration of Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice. Muslims worldwide celebrate Eid al-Adha by performing the Eid prayer, sacrificing an animal (usually a goat or cow), and distributing the meat among family, friends, and the needy.

The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, particularly the Day of Arafah and Eid al-Adha, are considered the best and most blessed days of the year. They offer numerous opportunities for acts of worship and spiritual growth and are highly encouraged for Muslims to engage in various forms of worship during this period.

The sacred month of Dhul-Hijjah offers a unique opportunity to increase your rewards and reconnect with Allah through repentance, charity, and remembrance.

It was reported that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.” [Bukhari]
