Muharram

The first of Muharram occurred on July 7th, 2024. This marks the beginning of the Hijri new year. Muharram is the first month of the Islamic Calendar and marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year. It is one of the four sacred months ordained by Allah (SWT) in which warfare is forbidden. Its name indicates this as the word Muharram means “forbidden”. Muharram also holds significance in Islamic history, during this month many important events took place. These include the Hijra sharif- migration of the Muslims to Madina, and the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) and other family members of the Prophet (PBUH) during the Battle of Karbala. The 10th of Muharram, known as the Day of Ashura, is a particularly virtuous day, and Muslims are encouraged to fast on this day and the preceding or following day. It is recommended to Keep a fast on the 9th and 10th of Muharram (the day of Ashura), or the 10th and 11th of Muharram. Muharram is a time for increased worship, reflection, and remembrance, with Muslims engaging in fasting, prayer, and acts of charity to seek the blessings and mercy of Allah (SWT).
