with ways to serve the community.

On the third Monday of every January, our Nation commemorates the life, legacy, and impact Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. left behind.

Dr. King was a faith-based community organizer who believed freedom and justice were God-given rights, he believed we are all brethren to one another, and that people should not be judged by the color of their skin but rather by their character.

In his effort to combat civil injustices, Dr. King brought together other faith leaders in interfaith dialogue and collaboration to form allies for the betterment of their communities. He showed us the power and strength of unity to transform society through nonviolence.

More so Dr. King's legacy reminds us that as the Qur'an states God made us into different Nations so that we may get to know one another and not despise each other. God Almighty continues to say: "Verily the most honored of you in the sight of God is the most righteous of you." (Qur'an 49:13)

On this day dedicated to commemorating one of history's prominent civil rights figures, let us take time to give back to the community. Giving back can look different for everyone.

Here are some ideas to spark your day of service:

  1. Support organizations such as MPAC (Muslim Public Affairs Council) that uphold our civil rights and help bring into effect policies that impact us.

  2. Serve those in need who are less fortunate by volunteering at our ICSC Saturday Food Pantry.

  3. Join one of our many interfaith collaboratives including the Interfaith Study Group collaboration to expand your knowledge.

  4. Volunteer for the Institute for Religious Tolerance, Peace & Justice or support by participating in one of their annual marches.
