Reflecting on Sūrah al-Baqarah

﷽
Once upon a time in western civilization, that so-called bastion of Judeo-Christian society, usury (what we in Islām call ribā) was considered a mortal sin. But oddly enough, usury has come to flourish in J/C civilization with most people today looking upon usurious banking and financial practices and transactions as completely normal if not commendable.
God says in the Qur’ān, Chapter 2:
"Those who do righteous deeds, establish prayer, and purify their wealth will have their reward with their Lord, and there will be no fear upon them, nor will they grieve (277).
O you who have believed, fear Allāh and leave what remains of usury (ribā) if you are truly believers (278).
But if you do not, then be warned of war from Allāh and His Messenger. And if you repent, you may have your principal amounts; do not wrong [others] and you will not be wronged (279).
And if someone is in hardship, then let there be a postponement until a time of ease comes. And if you give up the loan in the name of charity, it is better for you, if you only knew (280).
And fear a day when you will be returned to Allāh. Then every soul will be compensated for what it earned, and they will not be wronged (281)."
Finishing with a quote from American inventor, entrepreneur, and industrialist, Henry Ford,
“It is well enough that people of the nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning.”
May Allāh have mercy on us and bless us to live in a world where 27% interest is a grim fairy tale we regale our children with to scare them before bedtime!
