MALCOLM X DAY EVENT AT AIC
American Islamic College held a socially relevant and very successful Malcolm X Day Panel and Benefit Concert for Sudan and Gaza on Saturday, May 18th,
al-hamdulillah. Panelists included Dr. Lynne Muhammad (AIC's Biology Professor), Dr. Kim Searcy (Associate Professor of History at Loyola University), and Tarek Khalil, JD (Attorney & Activist, Education Coordinator, AMP-Chicago). The conversation reflected on the life and legacy of El Hajji Malik El Shabaaz (Malcolm X) and reflected on brother Malcolm's love forthe people of the Sudan and his expressed solidarity with oppressed brothers and sisters there and in Palestine.
The talk was followed by a riveting performance by 'The Jazz Explosion,' an ensemble of some of Chicago’s best, and most seasoned jazz artists: vocalist Margaret Murphy Webb, bass player Will Howard, pianist Roger Harris, drummer Steve Cobb, and saxophonist Dwayne Armstrong. They have played and recorded with Jazz legends, Max Roach, Elvin Jones, and Ramsey Lewis, among many others. This musical program included some of Brother Malcolm's favorite pieces and was a vibrant reflection, expression, and celebration of Black, Muslim, and Muslim-adjacent contributions to American music and culture. HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES!
AIC's President, Dr. Timothy Gianotti, was honored to have been invited to be the commencement speaker at two premier Islamic High Schools in Chicagoland, Universal High School (Bridgeview, IL) & the Islamic Foundation School (Villa Park, IL) on Saturday, June 1st, 2024. In his remarks, Dr. Gianotti reflected on his experiences with Muhammad Ali and shared stories of how the Champ saw value and dignity in everyone and devoted his life to lifting others up.
American Islamic College proudly congratulates the graduates, and commends their parents, principals, administrators, and teachers on educating and empowering the next generation of visionary Muslim leaders!
