Assalaamu Alaykum Dear Community,
Based on early alerts and emerging information, we have been notified that hackers are targeting Muslims in various communities in the United States, attempting to hack their phone numbers and WhatsApp accounts. These hackers collect phone numbers from different WhatsApp groups and then try to connect via call, often with an excuse, such as mentioning an upcoming Quran class. They then send a text message with a code and ask the potential victims to read it back. Once the code is provided, the victims phone number can be subject to hacking, negatively impacting other accounts such as WhatsApp, social media, and bank accounts. The hackers use sophisticated technologies to make calls from overseas, out-of-state, and local area codes (including 703 and 571 Virginia codes). They are hard to identify because they employ sophisticated phone number spoofing techniques.
We urge you to follow the below best practices to stay safe:
- Always screen calls from unknown numbers.
- Do not agree to receive or give out any codes over the phone (even if they mention Quran classes or ADAMS programs, ADAMS will never ask you for any code).
- Do not share any personal information over the phone with someone you do not know.
- Never give your phone passcode or password to anyone.
- Be cautious when downloading apps in your phone.
- Exercise similar caution over WhatsApp, Viber, and other communication/social media platforms.
- You may also file a complaint with the FCC to stop unwanted robocalls and texts. More information .
As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, the likelihood of hacking attempts and other cybercrimes targeting Muslims may continue to rise. We urge our community members to remain cautious and inform their family and friends about these risks.
Jazak Allah Khairan,
