Dear Brothers and Sisters in Islam,
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah,

We invite you and your families to participate in a blessed and communal Sunnah tonight the sighting of the moon for Dhul Hijjah 1446.

This is not only a way to determine the date of Eid-ul-Adha, but also an act of worship that revives the prophetic tradition of our beloved Nabi .

Why Should You Join the Moon Sighting?

  1. Determines the date of Eid-ul-Adha

  2. Fulfills a Sunnah of the Prophet

  3. A beautiful summer evening family outing

  4. Perfect time to teach children a living Sunnah

  5. Very high chance of sighting the moon tonight

If each of us makes a sincere effort to go out and look for the crescent in our own localities, this will help preserve the Sunnah, support authentic reporting, and bring us closer to the practices of the Prophet .Alhamdulillah, by the joint effort of all the Ulama and great cooperation of certain committed brothers throughout the country, we have established this noble practice of sighting the moon throughout the year, in many localities, all across the nation.

According to the most saheeh hadith, Nabi  told us that the beginning of Dhul Hijjah is marked by sighting the moon, not the announcement of Yawm Arafah:

( :1977 :1523 :4361 : 2791 :3150 )

"When you sight the hilal of Zhul Hijjah and one of you intends to sacrifice (udhiyyah/qurbani), he should not cut his hair or nails [until he has completes the sacrifice]."

For more insight, see what the Ulama say about how to begin Zhul Hijjah:

Significance of Moon Sighting for Dhul Hijjah

The sighting of the new moon marks the beginning of Dhul Hijjah, the 12th month of the Islamic calendar. This month holds significant events, including:

  • Hajj (Pilgrimage): One of the five pillars of Islam, performed during the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah.

  • Eid al-Adha: Celebrated on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, commemorating Prophet Ibrahim's (AS) willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah's command.

Engaging in the Sunnah of moon sighting fosters community spirit and adherence to Islamic traditions.
